Apple Pie and the 4th of July

By Jodi Lehman (From the Beacon, 18 July 2009)

The 4th of July is always special in Horseshoe Bay and centers around the daylong celebrations planned by the Horseshoe Bay Property Owners’ Association. Paige Schweizer, chair of the 4th of July Committee, and her band of volunteers have added some new events to the line-up this year.

Get creative and wear your patriotic best to compete in the Most Patriotic Costume Parade! Cool prizes await the winners. The competition has two divisions, one for kids (you old coots don’t qualify just because you may be young at heart) and one for adults. Plan to be at the basketball court at Quail Point on Saturday morning at 10:30 and march to John Philip Sousa following the Wildflower Dance Troupe performance.

Calling all cooks! The first ever Apple Pie Bake Off will bring Independence Day a sweet competition. Jim McDermott, Maris Lynne Long and Debra Columbus will be judging the entries (lucky folks!). This will be a fun contest so dig out your favorite apple pie recipe and bring your pie to Quail Point early Saturday. Tag your pie entry with your name, address, phone number and its type written recipe. The winning recipe will be shared with the community via the Beacon. Please call Janis Koby at 598-2137 if you have further questions.

Lynn Aldridge, HSB’s own Betsy Ross, will present a short flag appreciation program for children while they eat apple pie and ice cream (okay gramps, you can be a kid for this event).

Amateur sleuths can test their skills in a mystery guest game at Quail Point. Ask for instructions when you arrive at the park. Then it is up to you to discover the name of the mystery guest by quizzing party participants. A great prize awaits the champion Sherlock Holmes.

The 4th of July is a wonderful time for family. The committee has organized a multi generational relay event for grandparents, parents and children.

Art in the Park has been a favorite at Quail Point on the 4th of July. If you haven’t made arrangements to participate this year, call Lil Corrigan at 598-5197 and grace the park with your art for everyone to enjoy.

Hey big spender, now’s the time to “host” a group for lunch! Leave the $100 bills at home and feast on affordable comfort foot at Quail Point this 4th of July. For around two bucks you can buy the most expensive entrée on the menu, and that nickel you use as a ball marker will buy you a refreshing glass of lemonade. Come hungry and enjoy hot dogs, apple pie, ice cream, sno cones, watermelon, popcorn and cotton candy.

The indoor program at Quail Point will include recognizing our veterans, selections from Once Upon a Mattress (opening soon at Hill Country Community Theater) and performances by students from the Harmony School for the Arts.

Participating in the land and boat parades is always a treat whether you are in the parades or cheering from the sidelines. There’s always room for more floats and boats, so call Paige or Bob Schweizer at 598-5233 to register now. The winners will garner not only bragging rights for a whole year, but a fine trophy as well.

All awards and the winners of the raffle will be announced at 1 o’clock at Quail Point.

If you’ve never experienced a 4th of July in HSB, never shed a tear and felt proud to join your neighbors honoring our country in simple, sincere and delightful events, then you have a great treat in store for you this 4th of July. If you’ve lined the parade routes before, if you’ve joined the audiences for performances, if you’ve been rejuvenated by sharing a day with your neighbors in awe and thankfulness, then you’ll be back this year. See you there!
