Frequently Asked Questions:
Horseshoe Bay Deer Management

Are you going to get rid of aII the deer in Horseshoe Bay?

Definitely not. Our goal is to achieve a smaller and healthier deer herd. Lakeway has been a model for us because they mirror us in land size and they also had around 3000 deer ten years ago. Lakeway adopted a multifaceted plan to control their deer herd. They built a perimeter barrier fence, passed an ordinance against residents feeding deer corn, and transported deer out of Lakeway.  Lakeway has reduced their deer herd by two-thirds.

Do you really think you can transport deer out of Horseshoe Bay?

The Horseshoe Bay POA has removed over 700 deer from 2003 to 2005.  These deer have been removed through the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department's programs.  Current plans include removing nearly that many in 2006.  Most of the 2006 plan includes relocating these deer to ranches in West Texas.

What about birth control?

Present birth control methods available are prohibitively expensive for our large herd.

Isn't Texas Parks & Wildlife considering putting a stop to all deer transporting in the state because of the threat of Chronic Wasting Disease?

Yes, that is a consideration at present for TP&W. However, many Texas deer have been tested and no Chronic Wasting Disease has been found.  We tested a number of deer gathered from road kill in 2002-03 and found no Chronic Wasting Disease.  Again in 2006, we are required to test a number of deer before transporting deer to ranches.

Will deer be killed by sharpshooting or bowhunting in Horseshoe Bay?

This is our least favorable alternative.  Should this ever occur, all meat would be donated to the needy. Deer would be hunted in non-populated areas.
