WHO IS DRILLING HOLES IN OUR ROADS?

No, they aren’t mice, snakes, or animals looking for grubs, but people drilling holes in your street to verify the formation of the road base. It is called a geotechnical investigation or survey.

Experienced street maintenance personnel can usually determine the nature and extent of problems with the base material underlying the top surface of a street by looking at the surface and without digging the street up. A more definitive determination of those problems can be performed by what is known as a geotechnical investigation. Prudence would lead one to utilize both experience and technology to ascertain conditions before expending large sums of money to improve the streets. Two engineering firms have reviewed the Horseshoe Bay streets in the past four years and from their experience and observations have acknowledged that there are some areas that have a significant amount of failure of the base material under our streets.

Both of the firms recommended that the POA conduct further technical tests to determine the accuracy of their observations. These tests involve drilling test bore holes at selected sites. The holes will be four inches in diameter and approximately four feet deep. The material removed from these holes will be analyzed in the laboratory to determine its effectiveness for supporting the street surface and what remedies needs to be applied to make it satisfactory for its purpose.

With the data from the tests, more accurate estimates of the costs of repairing the roads can be made.
